AFA ArkLaTex Chapter 159 Selects 2026 Teacher of the Year

The ArkLaTex Chapter of the Air & Space Forces Association has named Mrs. Ida Smith of Benton Middle School as its STEM Teacher of the Year. Local AFA chapters select one educator annually for this award, which recognizes classroom teachers who inspire and guide students toward excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Mrs. Smith received a $250 award, a certificate, a padfolio, a window decal, and a complimentary membership to the Civil Air Patrol.

Mrs. Smith was selected almost unanimously by education leaders throughout the community. Her work focuses on creating transformative learning experiences that connect classroom instruction with real-world innovation, empowering students to see themselves as future engineers, scientists, and leaders.

As a STEM Ambassador and Master Educator with The National WWII Museum, and as a coach for the museum’s Robotics Challenge, Smith helps students connect history, technology, and innovation in meaningful and engaging ways. Her participation in the 2024–2025 STEM Learning Ecosystems Community of Practice has further strengthened her ability to collaborate across sectors and bring national-level best practices into her classroom and local community.
